University High School students take part in the National Rx Drug Abuse Summit at the Walt Disney World Swan Resort in Orlando. The students are part of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) which is a proud partner of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIDA and SADD arranged for three seniors from University High (Destiny Ramos, President, Naya Zapata, and Mimi Louiza and their advisor Sherry Viersen to attend and participate in the summit. The students assisted in exhibiting PEERx, a new, interactive, prescription drug abuse prevention initiative, via a two-day exhibit booth and a train-the-trainer workshop during one of the breakout sessions. The PEERx initiative is aimed at 8th to 10th graders and their influencers (i.e. parents, educators, community leaders, etc.) with a focus on peer-to-peer education and awareness.
This was an exciting opportunity for students to take part in a high profile, national event and to meet state leaders, health care providers, substance abuse counselors, public health advocates and drug prevention experts, among others…
