To kick off the school year, Shingle Creek Elementary teamed up with Gatorland, the City of Orlando Fire Department and The Central Florida Urban League to host a Welcome Back Community Event. With live animals, fire trucks, haircuts and free food, what’s not to love?
This event not only entertained and fed attendees, but it was also an opportunity to start getting ready for the year. Students met their teacher, dropped off school supplies, ordered uniforms and checked out their digital device.
Shingle Creek Elementary is one of 36 Orange County Public Schools added to the LaunchEd 1:1 digital device initiative. Students in kindergarten and first grade checkout iPads and second through fifth grade check out laptop computers (Dell Latitude at this school) for use during school hours. Teachers were on-hand to help students get logged in for the first time and set using, storage and care expectations.
With the ever-changing technological world, OCPS has consistently been a leader in 21
st Century learning, which includes media and technology skills. The use of digital devices teaches students cloud computing, digital media, and content management systems, as well as how to create a responsible digital footprint. Being computer literate ensures students are ready for their futures.
