The School Board of Orange County held its regularly-scheduled board meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center. These are the highlights of the meeting:

 

School Board designates February as Black History Month

Each year, the month of February is recognized as a time to learn more about black history; build awareness to social causes affecting not just “people of color”, but society as a whole, and celebrate the progress, richness and diversity of African-American achievement. The Florida Statutes, Title XLVIII, Public Education, Chapter 1003, Course of Study and Instructional Aids, 1003.42 requires instruction in the history of African Americans. This instruction is embedded in social studies classes K-12. Read the Black History Month proclamation here.

 

School counselors recognized Feb. 3-7 during National School Counseling Week

National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, will be celebrated Feb. 3-7. This designated week focuses public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors. This time will be used to highlight the tremendous impact that counselors can have in helping students achieve success and plan for the future. School Board designates February as Career & Technical Education Month

Orange County Public Schools and the Department of Career and Technical Education urges all citizens to become familiar with the services and benefits offered by the career and technical education programs of Orange County Public Schools, and to support and participate in these programs to enhance their individual work skills and productivity. Changes regarding administrative personnel

Superintendent Barbara Jenkins introduced the following new administrator:

Toby Hurst, assistant principal, Chain of Lakes Middle
