The School Board of Orange County held its regularly scheduled board meeting at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center. These are the highlights of the meeting:

OCPS recognizes School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day

Group of people at front of roomOrange County Public Schools relies on school crossing guards from its local and county partners to staff over 600 school crossing guard posts throughout the district. During tonight’s school board meeting several local crossing guards and their coordinators were recognized. School crossing guards perform a critical student safety function by monitoring traffic at key intersections and escorting students and their families safely across roadways during the school day. While performing this essential function, school crossing guards face many challenges during their work day to include environmental conditions, inclement weather and other factors. Despite these challenges, school crossing guards maintain their vigilance keeping the district’s students safe from harm. The district asks for everyone to show their appreciation all year long. Read the proclamation.

School Board recognized the historic OCPS fall sports season in football

OCPS history was made when three high school football teams played in their respective state championship classification games. Jones Tigers, Edgewater Eagles, and Apopka Blue Darters are district and regional champions and played in their closely contested state championship games.

“Our student athletes represented OCPS with character and class which is a direct representation of stellar coaches, athletic directors, and school administrative teams,” said Dr. Harold Border, Chief of High Schools.

All three head coaches were also finalists for the Florida Dairy Farmer Football Coach of the Year with Edgewater High School’s head football coach Cameron Duke taking the top honor.
