The Virtual Model through Orange County Virtual School offers learning anytime and anywhere. It is a flexible and customized learning model that supports students’ unique, individual needs, while satisfying state requirements for completion.

What to Expect: Elementary

 



Students will complete self-paced lessons but must also attend required bi-weekly live virtual lessons with their teacher(s). Depending on the grade level, students may have one or two teachers using a departmentalized model.

Core Courses (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies)

  • 3 to 5 hours weekly

  • 2 to 4 assignments per week

Electives (Art, Technology, Spanish, Physical Education)

  • 1 hour per elective weekly

  • 1 assignment per elective weekly

  • Students may also participate in virtual field trips and additional collaborative activities which will allow them to engage with their teachers and classmates.

  • Success is recognized not only in the classroom, but in award ceremonies which will be presented virtually.

Parent Commitment

  • It is recommended that parents partner with the teacher as a learning coach or guide – this is an average commitment of 4-6 hours per day. Parents can support learning by assisting with the following:

    • Monitor student daily

    • Maintain weekly progress

    • Ensure content mastery

    • Help with course navigation

What to Expect: Secondary

Middle and high school students will have one assigned teacher per course. Students will complete self-paced lessons and have the option to attend live lessons. Students must be enrolled in six courses.

Core Courses (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies)

  • 3 to 5 hours weekly

  • 2 to 4 assignments per week

Electives

  • 1 hour per elective weekly

  • 1 assignment per elective weekly

Parent Involvement

  • It is recommended that parents partner with the teacher as a learning coach or guide – this is an average commitment of up to 2 hours per day, depending on the student. Parents can support learning by assisting with the following:

    • Monitor student daily

    • Maintain weekly progress

    • Ensure content mastery

    • Help with course navigation

Additional Supports

  • Optional face-to-face student work days 1-2 per month at the OCVS campus for students who are on pace in their coursework
