Three boys stand behind a NASA space shuttle cake

Wekiva High School’s Culinary Magnet program continues to reap the rewards of their hard work and commitment to their craft. In addition to scoring the highest overall performance of any OCPS school at the ProStart State competition, a team is headed to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, to compete for “out of this world” honors.

The team is one of 10 invited to the National NASA HUNCH Competition, April 13. Students will use their nutritional science skills to create entrées for astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The students’ creations will be judged based on quality and taste, as well as their research paper and presentation video. The Johnson Space Center Food Lab will process the winning entrée and send it to the ISS for the astronauts to enjoy.

The Walt Disney World Corporation, the Orange County Farm Bureau and community donations are helping fund the students’ and Chef Christopher Bates’ trip for this unique experience.

Cake seen in photo is courtesy of Disney chefs who made a surprise visit to drop off a check to the team and wish them luck.
