Elementary Lesson Plans
Health Education is required instruction for all students as detailed in the OCPS Local School Wellness Policy. The state of Florida K-12 Health Education Standards have been updated and are now called the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. These standards will be fully implemented beginning with the 2010 school year. Until that time, the current benchmarks/standards may be used.
One component of the Health Education curriculum includes topics related to human sexuality education. The OCPS School Board approved specific human sexuality education guidelines and curriculum in 1991. These guidelines require the use of district-approved resources and guest speakers for the implementation of human sexuality education. The elementary curriculum is currently under review for updating. At this time, the Always Changing Puberty Education program is approved for use with 5th grade students. In accordance with state law there is an opt-out provision available by contacting the school.
The Arnold Palmer Foundation has provided funding to support the use of HealthTeacher.com lessons by all K-12 Orange County teachers. The use of these lessons will make it possible for every student to receive health education instruction as part of a planned, sequential and comprehensive school health education program.
HealthTeacher.com is a health curriculum for K-12 teachers and health educators. Teachers will find the lessons useful regardless of whether they have professional preparation as a health educator. Health educators involved in homeschooling, community-based health and mental health centers will also find it helpful. The curriculum delineates knowledge and skill expectations that are consistent with the Assessment Framework and National Health Education Standards for each grade level.
Each lesson plan addresses both content and skills, providing activities for students and assessments to measure student learning. Lesson plans may also include masters for visual aids and student worksheets. Teacher keys are provided for student pages when appropriate.
