Frequently Asked Questions

McKay Quick Reference Brochure

STEP 1: Parent should ask the following questions:

  1. Is the student currently enrolled in a public school?
  2. Does the student have a current Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan (IAP)?
  3. Was the student actively enrolled in a Florida public school during the previous school year and present during the October and February FTE funding counts of that school year?
    • If you answered YES to all of the above questions, please proceed to Step 2.
    • If you answered NO to any of the above questions, your child will not be eligible for a McKay Scholarship.

STEP 2: McKay Application/Intent process:

Filing intent does not guarantee approval of a McKay Scholarship. Parents wishing to file intent for a mcKay Scholarship must review the following guidelines and then go to the Florida Department of Education website and file their intent.

  • Ensure that the student's current residential address is appropriately documented in the OCPS Student Management System (SMS) at the current school (address on file with OCPS MUST match address you file at the state)
  • There are no paper applications: all Intents must be filed online at the state website
  • All Public Scholarship requests for first nine weeks must have been filed by July 3, 2018. Email [email protected] to file a request (see tab for Public McKay for requirements)
  • The student must be actively enrolled in a Florida public school on the date the parent files intent
  • Prekindergarten students who are eligible to enroll in Kindergarten for the upcoming school year may apply. Scholarship status will not reflect approval until the Kindergarten transition IEP is written, then submitted and approved at the district. ***Please note, this will take additional time after the meeting at the school***

Students are not eligible for a McKay Scholarship if they are:

  • actively enrolled in a Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) program at the time of filing intent
  • receiving another state Scholarship (including the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship  Scholarship
  • participating in a home education or private tutoring program
  • participating in more than two courses per school year in a virtual school, correspondence school or distance learning program that receives state funding
  • and/or enrolled in the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind

Filing Intent and receiving a Confirmation Number from the DOE website does NOT indicate approval of a McKay Scholarship.
