CORE FUNCTIONS

The OCPS Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) administers all fire prevention code, life safety, casualty safety and facility sanitation inspection and regulatory compliance programs for the school district. For fire prevention code compliance (only), Florida school districts do not fall under the authority of the local fire departments and are required to have their own chief fire official, which is the Fire Marshal.

OFM's primarily areas of enforcement are the Florida Fire Prevention Code, the Florida Department of Education’s State Requirements for Educational Facilities, and Florida Administrative Code Chapter 69A-58 Uniform Firesafety Standards for Educational Facilities, among other related statutes and regulations.

In addition, OFM:

  • Serves as the Authority Having Jurisdiction for the Florida Fire Prevention Code (FFPC)

  • Conducts fire prevention code enforcement and investigations

  • Performs Annual Compressive Facility Inspection (ACFI) Services

  • Manages FFPC-related construction and renovation project plans review and inspections in both new and existing structures

  • Oversees health department inspection report mitigation

  • Performs special event inspections

  • Is the District's local fire department liaison

  • Provides fire safety education
