 Common Core Initiative

Common Core State Standards Initiative
What is the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI)?  It is a state-led effort to improve education by developing a set of clear K-12 academic standards in English Language Arts and Math which will be consistent throughout the nation.
Why have Common Core State Standards?  American students are graduating unprepared for college and/or careers.  It is estimated that each year $1.4 billion is spent on remedial education for college students who have recently completed high school.
What is the solution?   We need clear and consistent standards across the USA and support for schools to help students achieve their full potential.
Click on the documents below to learn more.
Parent Roadmaps to Common Core Standards

The Council for Great City Schools has added to their parent roadmap brochures that explain the Common Core State Standards to parents for each grade level - now from K-high school.  You can find brochures for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics for high schools on OCPS website   https://www.ocps.net/Parents/Pages/default.aspx under “More about Common Core” for ELA and Mathematics.

In addition, there are video resources available that you might want to post on your school websites for the public and parents to explain the CCSS.   A description of each video is listed below:

  • Two three-minute videos (one in English and one in Spanish) that explains the Common Core State Standards in a slightly longer form. This is particularly good for presentations to community and parent groups. http://www.commoncoreworks.org/Page/378

Want to understand Common Core State Standards a little better?  Watch this 3 minute video!
