A message from the principal……

Dear Winegard Elementary Family,

On behalf of Winegard’s faculty and staff, I welcome you to the 2014-2015 school year!

Winegard continues to be a Professional Learning Community (PLC) where our teachers meet constantly to discuss each and every student’s academic needs. They collaborate to address the needs of each student in a timely and efficient manner. Delivery of instruction and assessments are adjusted repeatedly in order to maintain high standards in curriculum. Winegard implements a Positive Behavior Support system (PBS) that utilizes a proactive approach to handle any discipline issues. The faculty and staff have worked together during the summer to develop a school wide reward system that intends to maximize students’ desirable behavior and curtail detrimental actions. My request to you is to ask your student about his/her day and encourage appropriate conduct that leads to superior performance. There are countless research findings that validate the co-relation between academic achievement and positive behavior.

The teachers at Winegard are highly qualified and proficient in the subjects they teach. They offer experiential learning to the students in order to prepare them for the 21st century. Winegard has implemented AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) in 4th and 5th grade. AVID is a program that prepares students to be equipped and organized with higher education as the ultimate goal.

Since Winegard is a Title 1 school, we are provided with flexible funding in order to appoint a variety of resource positions, hire additional teachers, purchase required resources, and have parental involvement activities. We will strive to increase parent involvement, offer parent training, and collaborate together to provide a very positive experience for our students. You are entitled to the information regarding your child’s teachers’ professional qualifications.

Please be a part of your child’s educational process in every possible ways that is convenient to you. You may get involved by checking your child’s daily planner, assist him/her in homework, be at school for family Math/Reading/science night, and read to/with your child. I request you to sign up to be an ADDitions volunteer to assist us in school related events. I also look forward to having your supportive presence in the School Advisory Council (SAC), the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), and Parent Leadership Council (PLC) where decisions are made that impact our students.

Looking forward to another great year!!

Sincerely,

Dr. Julie Helton
