OCPS Parent Survey Spring 2017
WAY TO GO STEAM!
The Duke Energy Impact Grant awards Southwest with $3000 to fund a year-long, STEAM lab with lessons that integrate hands-on engineering, math, science, art and technology projects – culminating in students participating in the Solar Car Challenge (May 2017). These projects (engineering/design/robotics) will connect to existing science and Project Lead the Way curricula and include problem-solving challenges that offer consistent and comprehensive exposure to the engineering process, and provide opportunities for students to practice and apply problem-solving strategies and to develop teamwork and project management skills. Students’ final engineering project will be to construct their own mini solar car, race it, and use it to learn about solar energy. Students will learn how the motor works, understand solar panels, and acquire knowledge on gearing systems while competing in the Solar Car Challenge.
