Legislative Update, Jan. 17-21, 2022
Posted on 01/24/2022
Overview
The Florida Legislature completed the second week of its 60-day Legislative Session. And bills related to education continue to feature prominently.

On Tuesday, a Senate committee approved a bill (SB 148) banning the teaching of certain ideas related to race in workplace training sessions or Florida public schools. The Senate Education Committee voted 6-3 in favor of the bill seeking to reduce the influence of “critical race theory” in schools and businesses across Florida. The bill does not, as of now, allow parents of students to sue over alleged violations in the schools.

On Thursday, the House Education and Employment Committee approved a wide-ranging bill (HB 1557) requiring schools to notify parents about elements of their children’s education and their mental, emotional, or physical health.  The bill, approved by a 15-5 committee vote, also creates a legal cause of action for parents in cases where they think schools have violated the provisions of the bill. The bill also prohibits school districts from encouraging classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in lower grade levels.

The same committee also voted 13-7 to approve HB 1467, which would eliminate district school board salaries, making the elected positions volunteer only. The bill also creates new rules for choosing which books and other instructional materials schools make available to students, including making meetings related to choosing instructional materials open to the public. No Senate version of the bill is currently filed.
