The School Board of Orange County held its regularly-scheduled board meeting at 4:45 p.m. at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center. These are the highlights of the meeting:
School Board approves three policy revisions for the 2021-22 school year
The purpose of these revisions is to assure compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, Florida State Board of Education Rules, Board Policies, administrative rules, procedures and guidelines. The board also periodically reviews policies to promote transparency and accountability in the expenditure of public funds and the use of public resources.
Redline changes are linked to each policy
School Board will recommend delaying the previously-approved impact fee increase
The school board took up the issue of impact fees after the governor signed House Bill 337 on Friday, June 4, which limits the ability of local governments to levy these charges against new development. Impact fees are used to fund the construction of new schools and other infrastructure needed because of growth. The school board voted to make a recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners to delay the previously-approved impact fee increase until October 1, 2021. In addition, the fee increase would be phased in, with the full increase in place October 1, 2022. The district expects the delay required by the new law will cost OCPS about $10-12 million, or nearly half the cost to build a new elementary school, over the upcoming fiscal years. The Impact Fees are listed in the table.
