Great Beginnings 2002 Banner Great Beginnings is the welcome to and introduction of Orange County Public Schools’ way of work to beginning teachers. Research shows that “new teachers who participate in a comprehensive induction program stay in the profession longer and have greater success in terms of job satisfaction and student achievement” (Harris, 2015). The focus for our beginning teacher professional development aligns with the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices.

Great Beginnings this year will be offered virtually on July 20-23, 2020.

Teachers must currently be in an OCPS instructional position and have access to the Canvas LMS in order to sign up.

Who can attend Great Beginnings?

Great Beginnings is intended for any teacher with fewer than four years of experience who has not completed induction with OCPS. This could include:

  • Teachers hired during the 2019-2020 school year who did not complete Great Beginnings.
  • Teachers on a temporary contract in 2019-2020 and rehired to a school for the 2020-2021 school year.

Teachers with 4 or more years of teaching experience in a public school setting are welcome to attend Great Beginnings, but are not required to do so.

When is Great Beginnings offered?

We are excited to announce the inaugural offering of Great Beginning Virtual 2020. This summer educators will engage in some independent learning as well as attend a virtual session with awesome Great Beginnings facilitators from throughout the district.

The session will be over the course of 4 days, July 20 - 23rd. Participants will have the opportunity to select a time slot that works best for them to attend the virtual session each day (the same time for all four days). Following each virtual session, additional professional learning will be unlocked that will extend the learning from the virtual session and provide additional resources for the new and exciting world of education. We will be modeling strategies that are effective both in person and in the virtual environment.

The time slots that will be available will be:
9:00 - 10:00 AM
11:00 - 12:00 PM
2:00 - 3:00 PM
5:00 - 6:00 PM

Note: to successfully complete Great Beginnings you will need to attend all four virtual sessions and complete all in course work.

Where is Great Beginnings?

The virtual sessions will be located and hosted through the OCPS Canvas LMS.
