Promoting Adolescent Health Through School-Based Surveillance
Overview of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Cooperative Agreement
OCPS is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to promote adolescent health through school-based surveillance. OCPS project staff support the CDC goals of the cooperative agreement through the implementation of the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS).
The YRBSS monitors six types of health-risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth and adults, including:
- Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence;
- Sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection;
- Alcohol and other drug use;
- Tobacco use;
- Unhealthy dietary behaviors; and
- Inadequate physical activity.
The purpose of YRBSS is to:
- Determine the prevalence of health risk behaviors;
- Assess changes in the frequency of health risk behaviors over time;
- Examine the co-occurrence of health risk behaviors;
- Provide comparable national, state, territorial, tribal, and local data;
- Provide comparable data among subpopulations of youth; and
- Monitor progress toward Healthy People objectives and other program indicators.
