The School Board of Orange County held its regularly scheduled board meeting at 5 p.m. at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center. These are the highlights of the meeting:

 

School Board recognitions

2023 Purple Star School of Distinction

McCoy Elementary has been selected by the Florida Department of Education as a 2023 Purple Star School of Distinction. Honorees are recognized for providing military students and families with resources to transition to a new school along with hosting activities such asMonth of the Military ChildandPurple-Up for Military Kids. The Purple Star School of Distinction, which is renewable every three years, was established by the Florida Legislature and signed into law in June 2021. McCoy is the first OCPS Purple Star School.

Audubon Park Schoolfourth-grade student gives back

Audubon Park School fourth-grade student Audrey Wooten was recognized for her big heart and spreading joy this past holiday season. She earned more than $700 from making and selling homemade body scrubs. Audrey gave back to her community by using that money to purchase nearly 50 toys for children. She donated dolls, games and sports gear to the Orange County Mayor’s Holiday Toy Drive.

Windermere High seniors selected as ABLE Trust High School High Tech ambassadors

Last April, Jaycee and Damian were recognized by the school board as The ABLE Trust’s 2023 Project Venture entrepreneurial competition state champions for their Baby Buddy product, which is a safety bracelet worn by parents as a reminder to not leave their children in a hot vehicle. The ABLE Trust has taken their High School High Tech program further by creating an ambassador program that encourages three seniors in public schools throughout Florida to strengthen their workforce readiness skills and become more involved in their community.

 

The Great Debate: Florida’s National Civics and Debate Competition Winners

Apopka High junior Saaya Lijo came on top during The Great Debate: Florida’s National Civics and Debate Competition.Saaya wowed the judges while competing in Congressional and extemporaneous debates and impromptu speaking categories.More than 400 students from around the country gathered in Orlando for the three-day competition in November. All of the competition’s Inspiring Coach Awards went to OCPS teachers. The recipients are Apopka High Language Arts teacher Cathy Brown, who is Saaya’s coach; Lake Buena Vista High Language Arts teacher Melissa Gordon; and Lake Nona High Debate teacher Derek Antoniazzi.
