The School Board of Orange County held its regularly-scheduled board meeting at 5:30 p.m. via a virtual meeting room while live streaming on the district’s YouTube channel. These are the highlights of the meeting:
School Board approved WUCF & OCPS Education Channel
The Board approved a partnership with the University of Central Florida for educational programming to air on WUCF TV from June 1, 2020 through May 31, 2021. The goal of the partnership is to reach families with school-aged children with media content tied to educational standards, referred to as WUCF/OCPS Education. OCPS is committed to support families and the community by creating enriching and diverse pathways that lead to student success. The WUCF TV, virtual channel 24, is a Public Broadcasting Service (“PBS”) member television station licensed to and owned by UCF. View the agreement.
Board approves legal services agreement for e-cigarettes & vaping products lawsuit
Today the Board approved the legal services agreement regarding a lawsuit against manufacturers and/or distributors and/or sellers of e-cigarettes and vaping products. The law firm of Wagstaff and Cartmell, LLP; The Maher Law Firm; and The Moore Law Group, PLLC have been selected to represent the School Board in the lawsuit.
On May 12, 2020, the School Board designated the General Counsel as the legal representative of the School Board and authorized the General Counsel to join litigation on behalf of the School Board along with other school boards to initiate lawsuits against the manufacturers of e-cigarettes and vaping products to compensate the districts for damages suffered by the districts and its students as a result of the manufacturing, marketing, sale, and use of e-cigarettes and vaping products, and to seek any other appropriate relief.
