The state of Florida offers the McKay Scholarship for Students with Disabilities Program. Under McKay, a student may be eligible to attend a different public school or a participating private school. The student must also be age 5 and not be over age 22 prior to September 1 of the upcoming school year. (Students up to age 22 may not have already graduated with a standard diploma)

The state will provide a scholarship for the student to attend a participating private school, another Orange County public school (the district will choose this school for you in accordance with the school board's choice plan), or a public or charter school in a neighboring district if space is available and it is consistent with the school board's choice plan for any Orange County student who:

  • is currently enrolled in a public school,

  • was in attendance in a Florida public school in October and February of the same year during the funding counts and

  • has an active Individual Education Plan or 504 Plan.

Pre-K students will have a response of "Pre-K Student (Pending Kindergarten Transition IEP Meeting) until after the Kindergarten Transition meeting has taken place and the IEP has been submitted and approved by the District.

OCPS provides notification to parents throughout the school year regarding the guidelines for the McKay Scholarship program. Notification methods include:

  • letters distributed in the spring to all students in OCPS with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or Section 504 Individual Accommodation Plan (IAP) explaining the McKay Scholarship program and application process. The letter is available based on the primary languages of English, Spanish, and Creole (links in column to the right).

  • school choice option documents available at local schools and often distributed to parents at the end of an IEP or 504 meeting. McKay Parent Flyer.pdf

  • approval or denial letters mailed in late summer to all families who file intent for a public McKay Scholarship.
