The School Board of Orange County held its regularly-scheduled board meeting at 4:45 p.m. at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center. These are the highlights of the meeting:
 
School Board declared June 19 as Juneteenth Day in Orange County Public Schools
School board members declared June 19, 2022, as Juneteenth Day in Orange County Public Schools. Juneteenth honors June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news of emancipation for slaves. Throughout the country, Juneteenth is celebrated to commemorate emancipation and the end of slavery. It is a time for serious reflection and rejoicing regarding an end to a dark time in American history. Read the proclamation.
 
School Board approves proposed changes to the following policies:

JFBD – Magnet School Programs
JICI – Firearms, Weapons, and Destructive Devices (new policy)
JICK – Threats
JLF – Reporting Child Abuse – Child Protection
JLIE – Student Automobile Use
JJ – Extracurricular Activities
KBBA – Parental Rights and Responsibilities
DFAA – Use of Surplus Funds
DIE – Audits Financial Monitoring
EBB – Safety Program
JIC – Code of Student Conduct
2022-23 Code of Student Conduct for K-12
 
Policies repealed and incorporated into Board Policy JIC - Code of Student Conduct:
JICA – Student Dress
JK – Discipline of Students
JKA – Corporal Punishment
JKB – Detention of Students
JLIA – Supervision of Students
EEAEC – Student Conduct on Buses
 
Strategic Plan Update
School Board members received an overview of assessment updates for the 2022-23 school year. The presentation outlined the state’s new requirements and discussed how district assessments are changing as a result. View full presentation.
 
Board approves the adoption of math textbook instructional resources and materials
Following School Board Policy IJ governing the adoption of Instructional Resources and Materials, the public had an opportunity to provide comment on the recommended materials prior to adoption. The School Board approved the adoption of 9-12 Math textbook instructional resources and materials. View the adopted list.  
 
School Board approves the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school calendars
Highlights of the 2023-24 and 2024-2025 calendars are:
Pre-Planning dates are August 2-9, 2023, and August 2-9, 2024.
School start dates are Thursday, August 10, 2023, and Monday, August 12, 2024.
Students will be out of school during the entire Thanksgiving week for both school years.
Winter Break is comprised of two full weeks for the 2023-2024 school year. The dates are December 25, 2023 - January 5, 2024.
Winter Break is comprised of two full weeks for the 2024-2025 school year. The dates are December 23, 2024 - January 3, 2025.
Spring Break follows the end of the third marking period for both calendars.
The last day of the 2023-2024 school year is Friday, May 24, 2024.
The last day of the 2024-2025 school year is Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
For both calendars, previous patterns have been utilized to construct the prioritized severe weather make-up days.
