The School Board of Orange County held its regularly-scheduled board meeting at 4:45 p.m. at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center. These are the highlights of the meeting:
 
School Board selects Dr. Maria Vazquez as the next superintendent of OCPS
Tonight, the School Board of Orange County voted unanimously to a motion to approve Dr. Maria Vazquez as the next superintendent. She is the current deputy superintendent for Orange County Public Schools and will be the first Hispanic superintendent in OCPS.  
 
Dr Vazquez headshotDr. Vazquez has served at every level of the education system and has extensive expertise in curriculum and instruction. As a teacher, principal, and administrator, Dr. Maria Vazquez has dedicated her career to ensuring every student has a pathway to success. As Deputy Superintendent of Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), Dr. Vazquez has helped lead one of Florida’s largest and most diverse school districts to an “A” rating with a nearly universal (96%) graduation rate and has narrowed the achievement gap for Black and Hispanic students.

Next Steps: Contract negotiations begin. Contract approval expected in July.
 
School Board approved CTA contract for 2022-23 Salary Increases
The School Board and the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association (CTA) bargained a contract that included a compensation package and contract language for the 2022-23 school year. The compensation package represents a six percent increase to instructional payroll.  The package includes:
 
     • starting salary increase for teachers from $47,500 to $48,400
     • starting salary increase for school psychologists from $56,250 to $57,150
     • provides a cost of living adjustment of $900 for all instructional personnel and provides state-mandated performance pay of an additional $2,425 for teachers rated as “Highly Effective” for 2021-22 and an additional $1,800 for teachers rated as “Effective” for 2021-22.
 
There are also language changes in Article III and Appendices A and A-2 detailed in the tentative agreement.
 
The contract is subject to ratification by the Bargaining Unit.

Superintendent Barbara Jenkins introduced the following new administrators:

Grisel Avelia Louisjean, assistant principal, Winter Park High
Thomas Francis O’Brien Jr., assistant principal, Ocoee High
Jonathan Eric Rasmussen, principal, Castleview Elementary
Gina Maria Warkentien, assistant principal, Spring Lake Elementary
Joann Marie Dorries, principal, Bay Meadows Elementary
Gorsha Galbraith, principal, Ivey Lane Elementary
Elisa Mora, assistant principal, Winter Park High
