Superintendent's Summer Reading

Oceans of Possibilities

"Oceans of Possibilities'' is the theme of Orange County Public Schools' motivational summer reading challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to motivate children to read for pleasure and to ensure that students maintain their reading skills over summer vacation.

OCPS encourages families to browse the reading lists, interactive literacy websites, e-books, parent resources, and literacy events in our community. Students may also access the OCPS's Summer Reading Challenge via LaunchPad. This challenge encourages students to read and log their minutes electronically using the Beanstack application.

As your family reads this summer, OCPS encourages you to share the literacy message via Twitter. Using the hashtag, #OCPSreads, we hope our students (over 13 years of age) and parents will share what you are reading, where you are reading and how much you are reading. Utilize the hashtag when posting pictures of books and fun places that students read over the summer, too.

Visit the OCPS LaunchPad to access the Beanstack app for your students to keep track of how many minutes they read each day. Students can record how much time they spend reading this summer.

Here are a few easy ways to include reading as part of your every day during the summer, even when you are on the go! The Sora app provides students and teachers with access to eBooks and audiobooks and includes over 100 titles in Spanish. The Sora app is available for free on iTunes and the app store. You can also find it in the Library Research Tools folder on LaunchPad. In addition, Sora links with the OCLS and the VLC, to give students and teachers access to thousands of OCLS titles. Holds for popular titles can be made through the Sora app (Spanish Version)

Sora's here. Check it out.

Just Read, Florida!
Strong parental involvement is a key component of the Just Read, Florida! initiative. Other than helping your children to grow up happy and healthy, the most important thing that you can do for them is help them develop their reading skills.
