Summer Production Series
The Visual and Performing Arts Department of Orange County Public Schools, in partnership with the Phoenix Foundation of Central Florida, is proud to announce the inaugural performance in its Summer Production Series - In the Heights!
With music and lyrics written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, In the Heights tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind. Winner of the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Orchestrations, In the Heights connects generations through timeless songs of hope, community, and finding your home.
Over 11,000 students are enrolled in curricular middle and high school Theatre programs in Orange County Public Schools, the 8th largest school district in the country. OCPS was designated a Premiere Community for Theatre Education by Educational Theatre Association in Spring 2025 - the only district in Florida and the largest district in the country to earn that honor. Over 90 students from high schools throughout the district are currently working hard during rehearsals in the cast, crew, and orchestra for the show. The artistic team for the production is made up of OCPS teachers, whose programs have won multiple Applause Awards, including Director Alex Mendez, Associate Director Andrea Whitman, Technical Director Angel Gavillan Rivera, Musical Director Cristina Jimenez, and Choreographer Kailey Baez.
In the Heights runs from June 26-28 at Edgewater High School Edgewater High School, 3100 Edgewater Dr, Orlando, FL 32804, in Orlando, with evening performances at 7:00pm on Friday and Saturday nights and matinee performances at 2:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.
